HISTORY OF DESIGNER SHOW HOUSE RICH AS ITS INTERIORS: WIN TICKETS HERE!!!
Holly Hill, a historic country estate possessing one of the most stunning water views in New Jersey is the setting for the third Stately Homes by-the-Sea Designer Show House to benefit the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey.
Built in 1934 by New Jersey state senator and superior court Judge Thomas Brown, Holly Hill is said to be the last of the country estates constructed on Navesink River Road in the Locust area of Middletown Township.
The 12-acre property includes dozens of specimen holly trees, from which the estate derived its name, cultivated by Judge Brown, an amateur horticulturist who worked closely with the Rutgers University arboretum.
To aid in the country’s recovery from the Depression, Judge Brown retained local craftsmen to construct Holly Hill utilizing local materials whenever possible such as the peanut stone and cedar taken directly from the property. The 30-room, handmade brick Georgian style house retains many of the original features, including the African walnut grand staircase, a cherry wood paneled library, the “Aladdin Lamp staircase” between the sun roof and second floor, a roof dome covered in antique Brittany tiles, and pressed copper gutters.
To this day, the rich spirit of the Gatsby era resonates throughout Holly Hill from the lavish parties hosted by Judge Brown and his wife, an amateur opera singer who would often regale guests with the Judge’s favorite arias, to the festive sunset cocktail hours held on the roof terrace (or “Stinger Roof” nicknamed for the popular ‘60’s cocktail) where guests were treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Navesink River, the Atlantic Ocean and New York City. The fall would herald touch football games with teams from surrounding towns, while the winter ushered in sledding and skating for countless friends and neighbors.
The picturesque property of Holly Hill also includes a richly landscaped pool, charming pool house with guest quarters, and lush gardens featuring terraces constructed from 1800’s era brownstone weighing over 1,000 pounds each which were salvaged from area railroad bridges.
