NEW TOURIST-CENTRIC WEEKEND FOR ASBURY PLANNED BY GRASS-ROOTS ORG. (FIRST WITH THE STORY)

In response to the city’s loss of two major weekend-long events, local businesspeople and residents have rallied together, developing a three-day getaway designed to introduce Asbury Park to tourists.  And The Coaster and TheBPlot have the story first…

“Destination Asbury Park’s goal is to support businesses and position the city as a true vacation destination,” said Mikell Towery, owner of Mikell’s Big House bed and breakfast.  “The area is more than a place to visit for a day a couple of times a year or even just a weekend.  Asbury Park has evolved into a city to come to for a week or more.  This weekend is about a hip little city.”

The inaugural weekend, scheduled for June 20 to 22 will begin with a meet-and-greet and clam bake at the Beach Bar Friday evening and feature events Saturday and Sunday produced to showcase the best of every aspect of Asbury Park.  Visitors will be given incentives to visit sponsor restaurants, art galleries, bars, stores and other businesses.

“We want to support people discovering and falling in love with the city like we all did at one time,” said Towery.  “We hope to attract people who get what’s going on and come for more than the beach.”

Marketing efforts will speak to a variety of demographics.  Some of the weekend events will be geared to the GLBTI community.

“Showing off Asbury Park is one of my favorite things to do,” said Councilwoman Amy Quinn, one of the event’s organizers.  “We are all looking forward to bringing people to town and supporting our businesses.”

The date of Destination Asbury Park weekend was a strategic choice for a few reasons.

“We planned it for June because the rest of the summer is already busy here with tourists and it’s the summer solstice – the actual beginning of summer,” said Towery.  “If this weekend is successful, we expect to have three ‘Destination’ weekends every year, probably in the fall and holiday time.”
