‘SECRET’ SMARTPHONE APP HAS PEOPLE… WHISPERING + DEMYSTIFYING TODAY’S HOTTEST APP

Secret, the fun smartphone App launched in February has been captivating hipsters everywhere since.  The App is different in one major way than most other social media ‘toys’ – it’s completely, guaranteed anonymous thanks to multiple layers of advanced technology and an ‘unlink’ option.  Users are free to share thoughts and feelings, some they would never think of saying to a friend in person.

Two recent posts from New Jersey read, “Dear Mom, remember that diamond ring you lost years ago that was worth $12,000?  I sold it for $800 to buy weed and ecstasy. Sorry!!!” and “I still believe in something called a healthy tan.”

iOS and Droid platform users join ‘circles’ of besties, coworkers, acquaintances, frenemies and strangers but no one in the circle knows they joined. Users know how many people are in their circle but not who specifically, is in the circle posting thoughts and, err… secrets.  People build circles by sending anonymous email invites that start “Pssst, one of your friends invited you to join their circle on Secret…”

Once users join, they can be active posters or passively read and ‘heart’ (like and share) posts they like.  Per the App website:

“It’s not about who you are — it’s about what you say. It’s not about bragging — it’s about sharing, free of judgment.”

Forbes Magazine suggests the App is the beginning of a new, anonymous internet.  For me, it’s fun, silly and most of all, interesting – revealing a pulse on what people are thinking.
