4.5 TIPS FROM A “PROFESSIONAL SCAMMER”: RE-READ THEBPLOT POST ‘WIRED’ EXCERPTED LAST YEAR

My time at the Howard Stern Show and Maury Povich Show taught me how to make people living on the fringe of society compelling and interesting.  I have learned that taking the time to hear and personally legitimize the thoughts of those kind souls who have spent their lives being dismissed and marginalized by their busy families, friends and physicians can become a discovery of new characters.

When a listener called to emphatically slur to me that he had proof clowns were monitoring his life and trying to ‘reprogram’ him, I replied, “That must be really difficult. Fax me the paperwork you have.”  He was stunned that for the first time someone didn’t hang up on him or walk away.  Ultimately, he became a great caller.

In 2012, I met a self-proclaimed, proud “professional scammer.”  He had a lot to say.  This everyday-looking guy told me I worked too hard and shared with me his advice to keeping a job by working “much less.”

Tip 1:  Talk to yourself.  “Studies show that people who talk to themselves are smarter,” the pro scammer explained.  “Talk to yourself when you are at your computer and walking to the bathroom and no one will bother you by asking you a question or asking you to take on more work.  They will think you are involved in something and not want to interrupt.”

Tip 2:  Repeat what who looks like the boss says.  “If you actually have to go to a meeting, stay quiet but at some point repeat what the leader of the group says, in a different way – with a little twist and energy.”

Tip 3:  Be on time.  “Don’t draw attention to yourself by arriving late to work or leaving early.  People start to talk and bitch.  Being late is an easy way to get on someone’s radar in a bad way.  Half of success is showing up on time.”

Tip 4:  Walk around holding paper.  “Doesn’t really matter what’s on the paper but the best paper is one that has something typed on it and then some of your handwriting – at quick glance it makes it look like you have corrected someone else’s problem.”

Bonus Tip:  Practice reading the paper your holding while walking.  “It’s a good way to not make eye contact with anyone.  Not making eye contact lowers your chances of someone asking you to do something or a question you have no clue how to answer.”

He also told me about “the jiggler” – a device that makes it look like your mouse and computer are constantly working, “even if you are reading a magazine on your phone.”

It takes all kinds and his story killed me!  At least it didn’t involve a clown.  What do you think?  Comment below!
