WHAT GOOGLE MAPS DID WHEN SUNSET BRIDGE CLOSED MAY SURPRISE YOU + A CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Google and other GPS direction services have removed Sunset Bridge from maps, rather than note it as under construction.

Funny looking photo?  Google Maps has completely removed Sunset Bridge from maps, rather than visually note it as under construction.  Text for directions uses the detour.

The next reconstruction phase of Sunset Bridge is scheduled to begin Friday (March 6).  At that time, Monmouth County will commence test pile-driving for approximately two weeks, weather permitting.

“Residents can expect regular and repeated very, very loud bangs during the daytime,” said Laura Kirkpatrick, director of public information, Monmouth County.  “This is necessary work before the actual pilings will be installed and the bridge put into place.”

As of publication time, Google and Waze have noted in text that Sunset Bridge is “closed.” Yahoo, Bing and MapQuest list the bridge as active.

Google completely deleted the bridge [image right] on its maps. It just looks funny, no?
